Virtual Transect of Leicester

While playing around with the new functionality of Google Maps, I have created a Virtual Transect of Leicester which you might find useful. The transect is 15km long and dissects the Clock Tower. At each site I took a photograph facing North which has been embedded into the place mark.

Virtual Transect

Also included in the place-mark is the postcode for each site. By using sites such as Up My Street, Neighbourhood Statistics or the Environment Agency, students can use the postcode to explore and map a wide variety of spatial data across Leicester.

The Virtual Transect can also be viewed in Google Earth, click here to download the Google Earth file. Big thanks to Daniel Raven-Ellison for the idea!

Web based GIS for Leicester city

May 22, 2007 · 2 Comments

Have you seen this cheeky web based GIS for Leicester?

http://citystreatz.leicester.gov.uk/leicester_internet/CityStreatz%20web%20page.htm

It’s tucked away on the city council’s website but has some great functionality. I’m going to be using the data on here as the source of secondary evidence for our coursework investigation. Here is the blurb…

Having found a location you can ascertain a wide variety of information about the neighbourhood in which the property is located, the services that are nearby, you can even delve into the history of the area by displaying historic maps.”

Nice!

There is a marvellous lady in charge of maps at the council who can provide schools with really excellent OS maps… free of charge. I needed one for study area as the ones we were using were 50 years out of date! One telephone call and the map was in the post. They can also provide digital maps for use in GIS software like Aegis. Well worth giving them a call!

Geography Quality Mark

May 9, 2007 · 1 Comment

Ouch, my head hurts. My boss and I have just finished writing the department evaluation form for the geography quality mark. I’ve come away feeling depressed, enthusiastic and excited all at once.

Is anyone else doing this?

Worldmapper

People may already know about this site, but on the off chance that you don’t take a look. I’ve found the maps useful as starters in population and development topics. Also quite fun to look at if you’re feeling a bit geeky! http://www.worldmapper.org/
